Meet Gareth Mumford — Optometrist at Dudley Newton 

Gareth Mumford commenced his optometry career in 1999 after studying a Bachelor of Optometry (BOptom) with Honours at UDW, South Africa before moving to Cape Town where he practiced in corporate and domiciliary optometry.

Gareth relocated to Cornwall – UK, and after completing his studies at City University – London and gaining membership to the College of Optometrists (MCOptom), he worked for both independant and corporate practices.

In 2008, Gareth relocated to the beautiful beaches of Esperance, Australia and having a special interest in eye disease and ocular therapeutics, completed his post-graduate certificate in Ocular Therapeutics at UNSW.

In December 2017 after seeing a demand in quality eyewear & patient eyecare, together with dispensing optician Damien Gale – Dudley Newton Optometrists was born.

You will always find Gareth on the water during his downtime, he loves surfing, kite surfing, wind surfing and foiling.

His heart is in Esperance and with the Esperance community.

Meet Cayden Hill — Optometrist at Dudley Newton

Originally from Kalgoorlie, Cayden is a Goldfields boy at heart, with close family ties throughout the Northern Goldfields and a lifelong connection to regional Western Australia.

In 2020, Cayden joined Dudley Newton Optometrist, putting down the metal detector and picking up a fishing rod. Esperance is now home, but the Goldfields and its communities remain a big part of who he is.

Cayden has a passion for clinical optometry, from routine eye care through to more complex eye issues. He works closely with visiting ophthalmologists in managing eye disease and caring for patients before and after ocular surgery. Through Dudley Newton, he also established teleophthalmology services in Esperance, helping more patients access specialist care closer to home.

Paediatric eye care, myopia control, dry eye and specialised contact lenses are also key areas of interest. Above all, Cayden prides himself on providing comprehensive eye care and being a first point of call for anything eye-related in Esperance.

Outside the consulting room, Cayden enjoys spearfishing, surfing and camping around the region with his supportive wife and their blue heeler – Vinny.

Cayden holds a Bachelor of Medical Science (Vision Science) and Master of Optometry from Flinders University, with therapeutic endorsement.

Meet Damien Gale — Optical Dispenser at Dudley Newton

Damien is a Certificate IV qualified Optical Dispenser and has been working in optics since 2013. He has a genuine passion for great eyewear and helping people find glasses that look as good as they feel.

Together with Gareth, Damien established Dudley Newton Optometrists in 2017 with a simple idea — to do things a little differently. Great eyewear, honest advice and a relaxed, personalised experience.

Damien particularly enjoys tailoring the right pair of glasses to each person’s individual needs — from finding the perfect frame and fit to choosing lenses that suit their prescription, lifestyle and everyday needs.

Outside the practice, Damien enjoys spending time with his family, is an avid guitarist who enjoys writing music, and has a keen interest in brewing craft beer.
